Quoting Kanye

Kanye West makes music; music that for over a decade has drawn the ears of crowds and critics because of its overall sound, beat and not least of all the lyrics. Like all good rappers Kanye does things with words, very intentional things, that draws his audience in, keeps them close, and makes them think. Kanye’s newest album, JESUS IS KING has accomplished this once again but in a way that is unique from previous works. Just because this new album’s focus and themes seem different does mean the lyrics are any less thought out. They should once again make those who listen to them think deeply. Here are 5 lyrics from Kanye and what I believe they say:

Selah

  • “They say the week start on Monday. But the strong start on Sunday”

The center of a lot of people’s lives, and their self worth, is wrapped up in a job that  typically starts each week on Monday. For the Christian the focus and center should always be Christ, which traditional worshiped in the group setting of believers gathering together on Sunday.

Everything we need

  • “What if Eve made apple Juice? You goin’ do what Adam do? Or say, “Baby, let’s put this back on the tree”,  cause we have everything we need”

The fall of man occurred with Adam and Eve eating of the forbidden fruit. In the Genesis story Eve eats first and then offers the fruit to her husband Adam who also partakes.  By eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil they sought understanding away from their creator and the one who loved them most. Something we still fall into regularly.  What if instead of seeking understanding and life away from God we realized it was not good for us and looked to the one who has always provided “everything we need”?

God is

  • “Every time I look up, I see God’s faithfulness. And it shows how much He is miraculous. I can’t keep it to myself, I can’t sit here and be still. Everybody, I will tell to the whole world, its Him”

Kanye has “tasted and seen that the Lord is good” (Psa 34:8) and because of this he cannot help tell others how good God truly is. The call for Christians to tell others about Jesus is not a call to be followed with a frown but an overflow of a new joy found in their hearts of flesh.

Hands-on

  • “Asked for advice and they dissed him. Said I’m finna to do a Gospel album. What have you been heard from the Christians? They’ll be the first one to judge me. Make it feel like nobody love me.”

Christ said the world would recognize his followers by their love (John 12:35) and yet it is common place for Christians to continually put down and hurt their brothers and sisters in Christ.

The last set of lyrics are not on Kanye’s new album. But in discussing his new album and his new relationship with Christ to James Gordon’s famous “carpool Karaoke” bit, Kanye sung Jesus Walks and in this version he changed some important lyrics.

Jesus Walks

  • (Original Lyrics)
    • “We at war with ourselves”
      • “I want to talk to God, but I’m afraid ’cause we aint spoke in so long”
  • (Revised Lyrics)
    • “We are here to turn atheists into believers”
      • “I want to talk to God, I aint afraid”

In a right relationship with Christ, being saved, we want to see others come to love the one who has loved us unconditionally. Not only this, but we now are no longer afraid to come before God. This is not because we have come to a conclusion that we are better than we originally believed. In fact we now see ourselves as worse, but we also now see God’s love as bigger than we had ever imagined and we want to draw as close to that love as possible.
