Below is a list of things reported by Fox News (Link here) to take place at a Kanye West Sunday Worship Service.
- Christian Hip-Hop
- Lively Gospel Choir
- Billy Graham Style Revival
- Gospel Preaching
- Call To Accept Christ
Jonathan Morris reported, “
While I won’t be exchanging my Catholic faith for West’s experiment, I left Los Angeles with these takeaways:
— I believe Kanye is sincere both in his faith and in this effort to spread the Gospel
— Based on the many interviews I did with congregants, before and after the event, I believe these Sunday services will serve to bring young people to an encounter with God.”
Franklin Graham wrote earlier today on his facebook feed, ” I’m thrilled to read about Kanye West using his testimony of what God has done in his life to point thousands of people to Jesus Christ. Kanye shares that God has called him to hold what he has named Sunday Service Experiences with music and the preaching of God’s Word. This is reaching a whole new group of people.”
A word of caution: Kanye is a new Christian and it is not only possible but also probable that he is going to make some mistakes out of being a new Christian and out of the obvious zeal he has for Christ. I think to be on a witch hunt for mistakes that do not exist is unkind, but to be surprised by his possible mistakes would be naive of us. Which one of us can forget the learning process and what that looked like in our life.
He has renounced his previous views that he has held about Jesus when he was unconverted and I think we have to expect no more of him than that. I am reminded of the Apostle Paul in Acts 9. Kanye is not the Apostle Paul, but the kindness that Barnabas shows him should be exhibit by us as well.
And when he had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join the disciples. And they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles and declared to them how on the road he had seen the Lord, who spoke to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus. 28 So he went in and out among them at Jerusalem, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. 29 And he spoke and disputed against the Hellenists But they were seeking to kill him. 30 And when the brothers learned this, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus. So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.Acts 9:26-31 ESV
To quote Franklin Graham again (Who knows a little bit about revival services lol), “This is reaching a whole new group of people. In this Fox News interview, a 17-yr-old said he had never been to a church service before, but he came to this, and now he is thinking about Christ. That’s great. Kanye also has a new album called “Jesus is King.” Kanye is doing what he believes, even if there are skeptics and even though it goes against the liberal beliefs of most in the entertainment industry. Pray for Kanye—there will be many temptations and the devil will try to discourage, distract, and even destroy him. Pray that he will keep his eyes focused on Jesus, and that God would guide and protect him. God bless you, Kanye—we’re praying for you.”
I think it is important to rejoice that God is working in the life of a sinner saved by grace. A man who used to refer to Jesus as ‘yeezus’ now says that Jesus Is King. No one but God knows what his future holds, but it is my hope and prayer that he stays under the leadership of godly pastors and leaders to help him navigate this time of being a new disciple. We are all sinners saved by grace, so nothing but prayers for Kanye and what God is doing through him.
